Living for an Eternal Future Defined

What does Eternal Future Mean?

Living for an Eternal Future

Today, society lives for today, with little thought for the future ahead.

However, as Christians, we know we have an eternal future. A future in heaven with Jesus as our King, Savior, and Lord. He will be the King of Kings, recognized by all the world, for every knee shall bend and head shall bow before him.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.    Jeremiah 29:11

Below are a few scripture passages that speak to how we should live with our hearts and minds set on Eternity. This outlook is what helps us through our difficulties today, for we know they are temporary, while heaven, our true home, will be eternal.

1. Setting Our Hearts on Eternity

  • Colossians 3:1–2“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

  • Reflection: Living for eternity means prioritizing heavenly values over temporary, worldly concerns.

  • Matthew 6:19–21“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

  • Reflection: Our actions and choices should reflect eternal priorities, storing up lasting reward.

2. Living with Hope in Heaven

  • 2 Corinthians 4:17–18“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

  • Reflection: Eternal perspective helps us endure trials with joy, knowing our reward is secure.

  • Romans 8:18“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”

  • Reflection: Earthly difficulties are temporary; our focus should be on eternal life with Christ.

3. Reward for Faithful Living

  • 1 Corinthians 15:58“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

    Reflection:
Our work for God has eternal significance, even if unnoticed now.

  • Matthew 25:21“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’”

    Reflection:
Faithful stewardship on earth translates to eternal reward in heaven.

4. Life Transformed by Eternal Perspective

  • Philippians 3:20–21“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who… will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.”

    Reflection:
Our identity is ultimately heavenly; earthly life is preparation for eternity.

  • John 2:17“The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”

    Reflection:
Eternal living means aligning our will with God, not worldly desires.

5. Encouragement to Keep Running the Race

  • Hebrews 12:1–2“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross…”

    Reflection:
Jesus endured suffering for eternal joy; we are called to do the same with our eyes on eternal reward.

  • 2 Peter 3:13“But in keeping with his promise, we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.

    Reflection:
Our eternal hope motivates holy living today.

Eternal Future for Believers

There are several Scriptures that speak to an eternal future for believers, often emphasizing life in God’s presence, hope beyond this world, and the promise of eternal reward. Here are some key ones:

  1. John 3:16“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

  • This directly connects belief in Christ with an eternal future.

  1. John 14:2-3“In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”

  • Jesus assures believers of a prepared, eternal dwelling with Him.

  1. 1 Corinthians 2:9“But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.’”

  • This points to an eternal future beyond human comprehension.

  1. Revelation 21:1-4“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth… He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

  • Describes the eternal state for believers after Christ’s return.

  1. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen.”

  • Encourages focus on eternal realities rather than present troubles.

Living for an eternal future reshapes how we walk through each ordinary day. When our eyes are fixed on Christ and our hearts anchored in heaven, today’s trials lose their power to discourage us, and our faith gains strength to endure. We live with purpose, serve with faithfulness, and suffer with hope, knowing that nothing done for the Lord is ever wasted. This world is not our final home; it is the training ground of faith and obedience. As we wait for the fulfillment of God’s promises, we choose to live well now—loving deeply, standing firm, and pressing on—confident that an eternal glory awaits us in the presence of our Savior, where joy will be complete and forever secure.

May you find hope and a purpose as you seek Him, and live for an eternal future.
